HUNGARY Basilica of Esztergom

The history of the construction of the basilica

Basilica of Esztergom

The history of the castle

It was built for almost fifty years from 1822. The Esztergom Basilica has the country's thickest wall structure, which surrounds the sub-church designed in the ancient Egyptian style. Continuing our journey, we can see Michelangelo Grigoletti's 13.5-meter-high and 6.6-meter-wide picture of the Assumption of Mary, painted on a single canvas, which can be seen in the main altar. The Cathedral Treasury is located on the next level. Here we can see former liturgical instruments and the oath cross used in coronation ceremonies. In the Panorama Hall, you can see the exhibition about the history of the construction of the basilica.

Location of the basilica

The Basilica, the main cathedral of the Hungarian Catholic Church, located on Várhegy in Esztergom, is the largest church in our country. The most beautiful view of the building is from the Danube, from the Mária Valéria bridge. The church standing here and the medieval castle visible next to it are the defining sight of the Danube Bend.
