The history of the castle

AThe castle is located in Fejér County, in the city of Martonvásár. The Brunszvik family and Martonvásár have strong ties. The city was inhabited for a long time before it was depopulated during the Turkish era. Mária Terézia gave Antal Brunszvik the title of count and the estate in Martonvásár. The castle was built between 1783-1785. Ferenc Brunszvik rebuilt the castle in classicist style in 1820. Not long after, Géza Brunszvik also rebuilt it in neo-Gothic style. In 1893, it was owned by Archduke Lajos Károly József. In 1945, a military hospital operated here. In 1970, it needed to be renovated again due to war damage, and it was carried out based on Aurél Stupa's plans.

The castle park

the 70-hectare English garden surrounding the castle was built by Ferenc Brunszvik. Christian Heinrich Nebbien designed the garden. A small island was created by swelling the water of the Szent László stream that flows through the park. In the garden, alder, dwarf almond and exotic tree species were planted, such as cedars, swamp cypress, plane trees. The park suffered serious damage during the Second World War. The restoration of the park began in 1949. In 1953, the English garden was declared a nature conservation area. The area is maintained by the Agricultural Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The statue of János Pásztor Beethoven was erected on the island in the park on the 100th anniversary of the composer's death.
