HUNGARY National Botanical Garden

The largest arboretum in Hungary

National Botanical Garden Vácrátót

The story of the garden

The garden was built in the 19th century. In 1871 it underwent a significant change. Count Sándor Vigyázó bought it and entrusted garden architect Vilmos Jámbor (he also designed the Alcsút arboretum) and head gardener Henrik Band with the large-scale transformation of the park, which lasted for decades. Sándor Vigyázó stipulated in his will that if his son dies without an heir, he will leave his property to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The count's son died in 1921, so the Academy became the owner of the park.

The botanical garden, which is Hungary's largest and richest arboretum with a collection of plants, emerged from the castle park in Vácrátót. The Sződ-Rákos stream runs through the well-maintained park, the park also has a bridge, island and artificial ruins, a water mill and hills. In the garden, there is also a palm house, which creates a tropical atmosphere for the presentation of exotic plants, and a cactus house. There are 13,000 plant species in the 27-hectare area. These greenhouses were placed in the northern part of the garden.
