The history of the city began more than 1,800 years ago

Pécs is the largest city in Transdanubia. In the early 2nd century, a town called Sopianae was founded here by the Romans. By the 4th century, the settlement had become one of the most important centers of early Christianity. In 1009 King St. Stephen established a bishopric, and King Louis the Great founded a university in the city in 1367, which was the first university in the country. Medieval Pécs became the center of the country's cultural and artistic life for Bishop Janous Pannonius. The 150-year-old Turkish occupation endowed the city with rich architectural monuments. In 2010, Pécs was chosen as one of the cultural capitals of Europe.
